Benjamin ErrettApplication · Director of CommunicationsWaabi · Toronto

As clear and simple
as the truth.

I turn complicated issues into compelling stories. I learned how in a national newsroom, then led communications at an AI company, a medical platform and a climate B Corp, explaining complex technology to reporters, regulators and clients without overselling it.

The brief, line by line

I bring the experience required to excel in this role

Earned mediaPlace accurate coverage across technology, business and trade press

Pitched and landed front-page New York Times coverage for Green Standards. At Figure 1, secured placements in Fast Company, TechCrunch and BuzzFeed, and pitched Spotify on a joint survey of operating-room music that ran in Business Insider and Newsweek.

Maintained close ties with trade press across all roles.

Before that, 14 years at the National Post, ending as Director of Strategy. I know what a reporter needs before they ask for it.

Executive communicationsSupport CEO and executive team with talking points and thought leadership

Prepared CEOs at BlueDot, Figure 1 and Green Standards for keynotes, major media and, at BlueDot, a government committee appearance during COVID-19.

Claims disciplineSet guardrails on external claims, terminology and proof points

At BlueDot, an AI epidemic-intelligence company, I communicated outbreak data at the peak of the pandemic, when an overstated claim would have cost the company its credibility with governments. This included the thorny issue of anonymized phone tracking, which I addressed as part of the company's ethics committee.

Figure 1 was designed to allow healthcare professionals to upload de-identified medical cases to a global platform. Key to the enterprise was clear communication about how we protected patient privacy every step of the way. Our motto: “The best way to keep a secret is not to have a secret. That's why we ensure confidential patient data never touches our platform.”

Agency managementRun the external agency and hold it to results

Hired and directed Edelman at Figure 1 and Burson at Green Standards: set the brief, ran the cadence, judged the output. Pushed for metrics and results — and shifted spend when they weren't good enough.

Internal communicationsOwn internal comms with People and the CEO's office

Ran and revamped town halls, always using build-measure-learn and narrative kaizen with the goal of increasing employee engagement.

Team buildingStart hands-on, grow into leading a team

At Figure 1, built and managed a 20-person community, communications and growth team with a $1.5M budget. At BlueDot and Green Standards, I was the hands-on lead of a small function. I'm comfortable at either end. Increasingly managing both humans and agents.

Repositioning

Moving a company into a bigger category

Your posting asks for someone to tell Waabi's story as physical AI, not only autonomous trucking. I've moved companies into a bigger story three times.

2020–2021

BlueDot

From: epidemic intelligence softwareTo: the AI that was among the first to flag COVID-19

Turned proprietary outbreak data into client stories with the City of Chicago and Air Canada. Persuaded a media-shy Taiwan CDC to go on record, and the case study helped close government and enterprise deals.

2015–2019

Figure 1

From: a medical image-sharing appTo: a global platform for medical education

Created DDx: A Podcast About How Doctors Think, which reached No. 1 among medical shows on Apple Podcasts and is in its 11th season. The startup was backed by Union Square Ventures and went on to a successful exit.

2021–2026

Green Standards

From: office decommissioningTo: the circular-workplace movement

Founded the Circular Workplace coalition of 50+ corporations across four continents, led the rebrand and new website, and built the marketing CRM in-house with AI tools.

The first year

How I'd start

Built around your posting's definition of success at six to twelve months.

Days 1–30

Listen and audit

  • Sit with the CEO, engineering and commercial leads to learn what's proven and what isn't
  • Audit past coverage, claims in use and the agency's pipeline
  • Map the reporters who cover AV, logistics, AI and Canadian tech
Days 31–90

Set the rules

  • Publish Brand Guide with messaging framework, approved claims, terminology and proof points
  • Reset the agency brief against placement goals
  • Start the executive thought-leadership calendar with the Director of Marketing
Months 4–12

Build credibility

  • Keep a steady pace of accurate tier-one and trade placements
  • Establish the physical-AI story with third-party voices
  • Make the case for the first communications hire
A career in communications

Of the media and in the media

I stay sharp by writing for publication each week, maintaining strong relationships, and practising what I call narrative kaizen.

Let's talk about Waabi's story.

I'd welcome a conversation about Waabi's story to date and how I can help write the next chapter.
